Ursprünglich hätte der neue Sportwagen bereits im Mai 2020 gezeigt werden sollen. Doch die Corona-Krise zwang Maserati dazu, die Premiere des MC20 auf den Spätsommer zu verschieben. Nun steht der Sportwagen aber kurz vor der Markteinführung und absolviert letzte Tests auf der Rennstrecke und bei winterlichen Bedingungen. Die Modellbezeichnung setzt sich übrigens aus der Abkürzung für Maserati Corse (Rennsport) und der Zahl 20 zusammen, die sich auf das Jahr bezieht, in dem eine neue Ära in der über 100-jährigen Geschichte von Maserati beginnen soll. Mit dem neuen MC20 will Maserati auch in die Welt des Motorsports zurückkehren.
Unsere Highlights
Das Design des MC20 lässt sich in zwei Bereiche unterteilen. Den unteren Abschluss bilden dunkle Bauteile, die teilweise sehr klare Kanten aufweisen. Oben geht es organischer zu. Auf spektakuläre Aero-Anbauteile verzichtet Maserati, für den spektakulären Auftritt haben wir ja aber die Scherentüren. Die Karosserie aus Verbundmaterialien und Kohlefaser umhüllt ein CFK-Monocoque, die Frontpartie zitiert unverkennbar den Maserati MC12, am Heck dominiert ein dunkel abgesetzter Diffusor mit zwei darüber angeordneten Endrohren das Bild.
Die Dimensionen
Ohne Spiegel streckt sich der MC20 auf 1,95 Meter in die Breite. Insgesamt ist der Sportwagen 4,67 Meter lang und 1,22 Meter hoch. Damit reckt er sich weiter nach oben als die Konkurrenz von Lamborghini oder McLaren, doch laut Maserati wollte man sicherstellen, dass auch größere Menschen noch ins Cockpit passen – selbst wenn sie einen Helm tragen. Sie merken schon: Der neue Maserati will hin und wieder auf die Rennstrecke, und das macht der Italiener auch andernorts deutlich.
Maserati
Am Heck geben ein dunkel abgesetzter Diffusor und darüber angeordnete Endrohre den Ton an. In die Motorabdeckung aus Polycarbonat wurde ein abstrahierter Dreizack eingearbeitet.
Allem voran steht an dieser Stelle natürlich der neu entwickelte Dreiliter-V6-Motor namens "Nettuno". Mit 630 PS und 730 Newtonmetern maximalem Drehmoment sind die Fahrleistungen auf dem Papier beeindruckend. 2,33 Kilo schleudert dabei jedes einzelne PS nach vorne, denn das Fahrzeuggewicht liegt bei 1.470 Kilo. So geht es in knapp unter drei Sekunden auf Tempo 100 und nach 8,8 Sekunden passiert die Nadel die 200er-Marke. Auf den Begrenzer trifft die Beschleunigungsorgie erst bei 325 Sachen. Ein ölbadgeschmiertes Achtgang-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe portioniert die Krafteinwirkung auf die Hinterachse, einen Handschalter wird es nicht geben.
Antrieb und Fahrdynamik
Eine Prise Formel 1-Technik sorgt für das Performance-Spektakel. Beim beherzten Tritt auf’s Gaspedal sorgen passive Vorkammern in den einzelnen Zylindern für eine effizientere Verbrennung. Schon während der Verdichtung wird Kraftstoff-Gemisch in die Vorkammer gepresst und dort gezündet. Der Explosionsdruck schießt durch eine gelochte Scheibe in die Hauptbrennkammer, in der eine zweite Zündung stattfindet. Maserati / Patrick Lang
Der patentierte Motor "Nettuno" soll in abgewandelter Form künftig auch weitere Modelle von Maserati antreiben.
Wer so viel Kraft entfesselt, kann im 21. Jahrhundert auf reichlich unterstützende Technik zurückgreifen. Das tut auch der MC20. An Bord sind Torque Vectoring zur optimalen Drehoment-Verteilung, Dabei hilft zudem ein elektronisches Differential an der Hinterachse mit bis zu 100 Prozent Sperrwirkung. Obwohl, wie bereits erwähnt, keine ausladenden Aero-Teile an der Karosserie prangen, verzichtet der Sportwagen natürlich nicht auf optimierte Aerodynamik.
Helfer der Dynamik
Dabei wollten die Designer so dezent wie möglich bleiben, was durchaus auch gelungen ist. Die Luft-Ein- und Auslässe auf der Fronthaube und an den Seiten sind so in die Karosserie integriert, dass sie je nach Blickwinkel auf das Auto praktisch verschwinden. Dennoch generiert der MC20 bei Tempo 240 bis zu 100 Kilo Anpressdruck. Dafür verbrachten die Ingenieure mehr als 2.000 Stunden im Windkanal von Entwicklungspartner Dallara.
Eingefangen wird die wilde Fahrt von einer Karbon-Keramik-Bremsanlage aus dem Hause Brembo. Bis dahin sollen die elektronischen Dämpfer in der Lage sein, die Straße "zu lesen". Das System nennt Maserati ICU Chassis Control, und will damit sicherstellen, dass der MC20 nicht nur auf der Rennstrecke abliefert, sondern auch im Alltag ein angenehmer Begleiter sein kann. Also nicht der Alltag im Sinne eines Wocheneinkaufs, versteht sich. Mit 150 Litern Gepäckvolumen kämen Sie da vermutlich nicht weit.
Das Cockpit
Laut Maserati sind die Scherentüren übrigens nicht ausschließlich dazu da, um Eindruck zu schinden. Laut Designchef Klaus Busse sorgt die Konstruktion auch dafür, dass der Einstieg erleichtert wird. Nehmen wir also mal Platz. Im Innenraum geben Alcantara, Karbon und Leder den Ton an. Die Sportsitze sind im Laser-Cut-Verfahren geschlitzt und wie auch die Türverkleidungen mit einer Akzentfarbe hinterlegt, die sich der Kunde später aussuchen kann. Das Karbon-Lenkrad trägt unter anderem die Tasten für den Start des Motors und der Launchcontrol.
Maserati
Im Innenraum geht es dunkel zu. Die Sitze sind mit einer Akzentfarbe hinterlegt.
Auf der Mittelkonsole gibt es nur wenige Bedienelemente. Einen Aluminium-Drehregler (aus dem Block gefräst), der über sein Keramik-Inlay Auskunft über den gewählten Fahrmodus gibt. Darunter sitzen Tasten für die Gangwahl und die Fensterheber. Alle weiteren Funktionen werden über den 10,25-Zoll großen Touchscreen in der Mitte gesteuert. Die digitalen Instrumente hinter dem Lenkrad sind gleich dimensioniert, jedoch – wie üblich – nicht berührungssensitiv.
Infotainment und Assistenten
Im MC20 gibt eine neue Infotainment-Generation ihr Debüt. Das beinhaltet verschiedene Assistenzsysteme wie den Rear-Cross-Traffic-Assist, einen adaptiven Tempomaten, Totwinkelwarner und eine Parkassistenz. Letztere wird um eine Rückfahrkamera ergänzt, die in einer Finne auf dem Heck untergebracht wurde, und ihr Bild direkt auf den Innenspiegel gibt. Das ist hilfreich, denn die Übersichtlichkeit ist ganz in Sportwagen-Manier geraten: Wenig übersichtlich, zumindest nach hinten.
Maserati
Auf dem Lenkrad sitzen die Tasten für Motorstart und Launchcontrol.
Mit dem Infotainment-System lassen sich auch Smartphones koppeln, zudem gibt es eine Connect-App. Diese informiert den Besitzer über Kraftstoffstand, Türverriegelung, Fahrzeugposition, Reifendruck und weitere Parameter. Außerdem kann sie als Alarmanlage konfiguriert werden und eine Warnung abgeben, sollte das Fahrzeug bewegt werden. Per WLAN-Hotspot im MC20 selbst, können bis zu acht mobile Endgeräte verbunden werden. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass es nur zwei Sitzplätze gibt, dürfte das Ausschöpfen dieser Kapazitäten ein unterhaltsames Bild abgeben.
Prototyp als Stirling Moss-Hommage
Im Motorsport war die Edelmarke in früheren Zeiten sehr erfolgreich unterwegs. In den Fünfzigerjahren griff unter anderem die kürzlich im Alter von 90 Jahren verstorbene Motorsport-Legende Stirling Moss für die Italiener ins Lenkrad. Einen seiner größten Siege errang der Brite in einem Maserati: Am 13. Mai 1956, also vor genau 64 Jahren, steuerte er seinen 250F zum Triumph beim Großen Preis von Monaco, wobei er in jeder der 100 Runden führte. Außerhalb der Formel 1 ging Moss für Maserati zudem mit Modellen wie dem Tipo 60 Birdcage, Tipo 61 und 300 S an den Start.

Um an diese spezielle Verbindung zu erinnern, hat Maserati einem MC20-Prototypen nun ein Stirling Moss-Design verpasst. Die Farbgebung lehnt sich an jene des Maserati Eldorado an. Den kultigen Einsitzer fuhr Stirling Moss 1958 bei seinem Debüt in Monza im Rahmen der "Trofeo dei due Mondi". Außerdem trägt der Prototyp den Namen des Rennfahrers am Heck und auf seinen Kotflügeln.
Teuer und farbenfroh
Gebaut wird der neue Sportwagen im Maserati-Werk in Modena, wo die Produktion des Gran Turismo im Dezember 2019 ausgelaufen ist. Bis 2022 wird der MC20 noch als Cabrio und als rein elektrische Version vorgestellt. Die Elektro-Version soll nach heutigen Informationen gerade in Sachen Längsdynamik noch eine Portion mehr Drama liefern.

Maserati verabschiedet sich vom alten Alfieri-Konzept.
